Nonprofit grants and funding

Your mission matters, and so does how it is funded. Explore grants, community funding and suitable financing resources for nonprofits and charities in Canada and the United States.
Request a funding review Browse official resources
This asks CELER for a review. It is not an application to a funder. Eligibility, availability and decisions stay with the funder.
Start with your organization, not a credit score
Tell us your legal status, where you operate and what the funding would support. Grant-only enquiries follow a separate path: no credit score, no monthly-deposit minimum, and they are never sent to lenders.
Your first enquiry never needs banking logins, ID numbers, donor lists or beneficiary records. Please do not include them.

What to prepare for a program-specific review
- Organization status and governing documents
- Project summary, expected outcomes and delivery locations
- Project budget and proposed start date
- Financial statements or an annual operating-budget range
- Other confirmed funding or required matching contributions
- Relevant approvals, registrations and authorized contacts
The funder's own checklist controls what must be submitted. Costs, timing, matching and documents vary by program.
Questions nonprofits ask first
Do we need to be a registered charity?
Not for every opportunity, but your actual status matters. Canada distinguishes registered charities from non-profit organizations, and US federal notices list nonprofits with and without 501(c)(3) status as separate applicant types, subject to each notice. Tell us your real status, including "not sure". An enquiry answer is not a legal determination.

Can nonprofits get business loans?
Some can, but programs differ. SBA 7(a) and 504 loans require for-profit borrowers, while SBA microloans include certain nonprofit child-care centers. A grant-only enquiry is never treated as permission to look for a loan; a lending route needs its own fit check and your consent.

Is grant funding guaranteed?
No. Funders set their own eligibility and selection rules, and belonging to a broad applicant category does not make you eligible for a specific opportunity. We do not promise an award, an amount or a decision date. A CELER review is not a funding approval.

Does this form apply to government programs for us?
No. It sends your enquiry to CELER only. An official application must follow the funder's current process and its rules on who may submit. A CELER confirmation email is not proof that a funder received anything.
What does it cost?
Answering a nonprofit enquiry and pointing you to resources does not cost you anything. We do not currently sell grant-writing or application services. If that ever changes, the scope and any fee would be shown in writing before you agree, and no fee buys a grant.
