Are there farm-specific financing options in Canada and the US?

Canada · United States Draft, not yet reviewed

Yes, both countries have dedicated agriculture channels, and general small-business programs often treat farming differently.

In Canada, Farm Credit Canada has an agriculture financing page. USDA's Farm Service Agency runs farm loan programs in the US. These are separate routes with their own rules.

General programs can exclude farms. The Canada Small Business Financing Program excludes farming businesses, and CanExport SMEs directs agricultural and agri-food export support elsewhere.

So before applying for a general small-business program, check whether agriculture is excluded. Then look at the dedicated farm channel for your country.

Details such as eligible uses, rates and applicant tests were not researched here and vary by program. Nothing here predicts approval.

Next step: open the FCC or USDA FSA page that matches where your farm operates.

Can my type of business or project be excluded from a funding program?

Canada · United States Draft, not yet reviewed

Yes. Programs often exclude certain sectors, organization types and uses of money, so check the exclusions before you spend time on an application.

Examples show the pattern. BDC excludes charitable, religious and fraternal organizations and financial-services activities. The Canada Small Business Financing Program excludes farming, holding companies and trusts. SBA 504 does not cover working capital, inventory or speculative rental property. SBA disaster economic injury loans cannot fund expansion, fixed assets or physical repair. USDA Community Facilities targets essential community facilities, not private commercial ventures.

A sector label such as housing, climate or arts is a way to search, not proof of eligibility or an open round.

Compare your purpose, organization type and location against each program's list. This is general information, not an eligibility decision.

Next step: start with the official page for each program you are considering.

Can individual artists in Canada get Canada Council funding?

Canada Draft, not yet reviewed

Yes, individual professional artists and groups can be eligible for Canada Council grants, subject to residency and professional-status tests.

The Council says Canadian citizens, permanent residents or protected persons who have training in their art form and are recognized by peers as professionals may be eligible. Grants can support creating, producing and presenting work, professional development, residencies, travel and sector development. It also offers prizes and help with application costs, and Public Lending Right payments to creators whose works are in public libraries.

These are arts-sector programs, not general business funding. Individual programs have their own deadlines and criteria, which were not reviewed here.

Nothing here predicts a grant.

Next step: open the Council's funding page, choose a program and read its eligibility and deadline.

Can a Canadian arts organization get operating funding from the Canada Council?

Canada Draft, not yet reviewed

Possibly. The Canada Council says arts organizations may be eligible for operating-cost funding, but eligibility is program-specific.

That is separate from the grants it describes for individual artists and groups. The funding page does not set out the organization tests, such as legal form, track record or budget, so you must read the specific program guidelines.

Operating funding is not the same as project funding, and it is rarely open to brand-new organizations. Check the current guidelines to see what your organization needs, and plan time for the application.

Nothing here predicts approval.

Next step: open the Canada Council funding page, find the organization programs, and read the eligibility and deadline details. Provincial arts councils are separate funders worth checking too.

What arts grants does the US National Endowment for the Arts offer organizations?

United States Draft, not yet reviewed

The NEA's grants page lists project funding for organizations, and it does not state individual-artist eligibility there.

It names Grants for Arts Projects, Challenge America for small organizations with less than $250,000 in prior-year operating expenses (grants of $10,000 for projects reaching underserved communities), and Partnership Agreement Grants for state and regional arts agencies. Our Town applies through the Grants for Arts Projects route.

The page does not mention nonprofit status or cost share, so read the guidelines and the First Time Applicant Guide for Organizations.

Does the SBA have loans specifically for women-owned businesses?

United States Draft, not yet reviewed

No SBA loan program on its main loans page is aimed only at women, though women-owned firms can use the general programs.

As read on 1 November 2026, the SBA loans page listed 7(a), 504, microloans, exporter loans and Lender Match, and none of those named women. The Women-Owned Small Business program is a federal contracting program, where certain contracts can be reserved for women-owned small businesses. That is a way to win government contracts, not a loan or grant.

General loan terms and lender tests still apply to everyone, and approval is never assured.

Next step: look at SBA lending options at the SBA site and talk to a lender, and read the WOSB contracting rules separately if you want to bid on federal work.

Are there loans just for veteran-owned businesses in Canada or the US?

Canada · United States Draft, not yet reviewed

The sources read here did not show a dedicated veteran-only loan, though veteran-focused support exists in other forms.

As of 1 November 2026, the SBA loans page did not name veterans in any loan program. The SBA lists service-disabled veteran-owned businesses as a federal contracting set-aside category, which is about winning contracts, not borrowing. The Canadian federal directory lists veteran entrepreneurs among national support streams but does not describe what they provide.

There may be veteran programs elsewhere that were not reviewed. Do not assume fee relief or special terms without checking the lender and official page.

Are SBA contracting set-asides such as 8(a) and HUBZone a form of funding?

United States Draft, not yet reviewed

No. They are contracting preferences that can let certified firms win reserved federal contracts, not grants or loans.

The SBA's contracting assistance page names four: the 8(a) Business Development program, HUBZone, the Women-Owned Small Business program and service-disabled veteran-owned set-asides. Winning a contract produces revenue, but only after you deliver, and it is not cash in advance.

Keep contract income separate from grants and loans when you plan your finances. Each program has its own certification and eligibility rules, which were not detailed on the page.

Nothing here predicts a contract.

Can a nonprofit childcare center get an SBA microloan?

United States Draft, not yet reviewed

Possibly. The SBA says its microloans also serve certain nonprofit childcare centers, so check whether yours qualifies.

Microloans are small loans up to $50,000 made through intermediary lenders rather than directly by the SBA. The loans page notes that certain non-profit child care centers can use them. The page does not give the full tests, so confirm with the intermediary lender in your area.

A loan must be repaid, which makes it different from a childcare grant. Underwriting still applies and approval is never assured.

Can freelancers and gig workers get business funding?

United States Draft, not yet reviewed

Sometimes, but options are narrower than for incorporated firms. In the US, the SBA Microloan program lends up to $50,000 to small for-profit businesses, and the SBA page says it is designed to help businesses start up and expand. The page does not address sole proprietors or home-based work directly, so confirm with a microlender.

Microloan funds can be used for working capital, inventory, supplies, furniture, fixtures, machinery and equipment, not to pay existing debts or buy real estate.

SBA's guide also lists self-funding, crowdfunding and bank loans as other routes, and warns that banks can be reluctant to lend to sole proprietors, who carry personal liability for the business.

Is there federal funding for British Columbia's forest sector?

Canada · Canada Draft, not yet reviewed

One route is PacifiCan's new Regional Development Fund, which its home page says supports transformation of the forest sector.

As of 1 November 2026, the page named the fund but did not give amounts, eligible applicants, costs or intake dates. Treat it as a lead to check, not an open program.

Forestry and tariffs may also connect to the Regional Tariff Response Initiative that the agency lists. Provincial forestry programs exist but were not reviewed here.

Is there Canadian federal support for defence and security suppliers?

Canada Draft, not yet reviewed

Several federal routes mention defence, but they differ: some are funding, one is a procurement policy.

As of 1 November 2026, CED listed the Regional Defence Investment Initiative as accepting applications. FedDev Ontario's home page mentions funding and procurement guidance for defence, and FedNor points suppliers to the Industrial and Technological Benefits Policy on federal defence and security procurement.

The pages gave no amounts or eligibility tests. A procurement policy is not a grant, and a program listing is not a guarantee of money.

Is there special Medicare payment status for small rural hospitals in the US?

United States Draft, not yet reviewed

Yes. Medicare has special payment designations for some small rural hospitals, but these are payment rules, not grants.

A Critical Access Hospital has no more than 25 acute care beds and is generally more than 35 miles from the nearest hospital, with exceptions. It is paid based on Medicare allowable costs: 101% of the Medicare share, subject to sequestration cuts.

A Rural Emergency Hospital keeps emergency and outpatient services but has no inpatient beds. It is paid the outpatient rate plus 5% and a monthly facility payment. Critical access hospitals and small rural hospitals with up to 50 beds that were open on December 27, 2020 may apply for that status.

Does the federal government pay Canadian businesses directly after a flood or wildfire?

Canada Draft, not yet reviewed

Not through the federal Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements (DFAA), as described on Public Safety Canada's page. That program pays provincial and territorial governments, not individual businesses.

The page says DFAA provides financial assistance to provinces and territories for response and recovery costs from large-scale disasters caused by natural hazards. It lists separate guidelines for eligible disasters beginning April 1, 2025 and for earlier disasters.

The page does not mention private businesses or individuals, so it does not show any direct payment route for them. Any help for a business after a flood or wildfire may come through the province or territory, insurance, or another program, and those were not researched here.

Do US restaurants get a tax credit for employer payroll tax on tips?

United States Draft, not yet reviewed

Possibly. Employers at food and beverage establishments can claim an IRS credit for the employer share of Social Security and Medicare tax on certain employees' tips.

The IRS page says Form 8846 is used to claim that credit. It is part of the general business credit, which is reported on Form 3800.

This is a tax credit that reduces tax owed. It is not a grant, loan or cash payment, and it is separate from financing.

Can a beginning or small US farm get a small operating loan from the FSA?

Uses include livestock, equipment, feed, seed, supplies, minor improvements and repairs, marketing costs and family living expenses. Terms run from one to seven years, with rates set by FSA.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens, non-citizen nationals or qualified aliens, with satisfactory credit history and farm management experience or education. The application goes to the local FSA office and includes financial and production information and a farm business plan.

Can a trucking company get EPA money to replace or clean up old diesel trucks?

What financing do construction and trades businesses use, including bonding?

United States Draft, not yet reviewed

Many contractors combine ordinary business credit with surety bonds. In the US, the SBA Surety Bond Guarantee backs bid, performance and payment bonds issued by certain surety companies, helping small businesses that might not meet other sureties' criteria win contracts.

The SBA says contracts can be up to $9 million for non-federal work and up to $14 million for federal work. The business must qualify as small under SBA size standards and meet the surety's credit, capacity and character requirements. You apply through an authorized surety agency, and for performance and payment bonds the SBA charges a fee of 0.6% of the contract price. Bid bonds carry no SBA fee.

A surety bond is a guarantee to the project owner, not a loan or a grant. Equipment and working-capital needs need separate financing, for example SBA 7(a) or a 504 loan. Canadian bonding works through private surety companies, which was not covered here.

How can a medical or dental practice finance equipment or a purchase?

United States Draft, not yet reviewed

A for-profit practice that meets SBA's rules may be able to use an SBA-backed loan, but the lender decides. SBA 7(a) lists permitted uses that include machinery and equipment, working capital, changes of ownership and real estate. A 504 loan, made through a Certified Development Company with a senior lender, can fund buying or renovating buildings or land and long-term equipment with a useful life of at least 10 years, but not working capital.

The borrower must be an operating for-profit US small business, not an ineligible type, and creditworthy with a reasonable ability to repay. SBA lists some ineligible categories in 13 CFR 120.110, including non-profit businesses.

What funding options exist for cannabis businesses?

United States · Canada Draft, not yet reviewed

Federally backed options are limited. SBA's rules in 13 CFR 120.110 make a business ineligible if it is engaged in any activity that is illegal under federal, state or local law. SBA loan programs, including 7(a) and 504, apply that eligibility rule, so SBA-backed loans generally are not available for cannabis activity that is illegal at the federal level.

That is a US federal rule. Canada legalized cannabis nationally, and financing there depends on lenders and provincial licensing, which was not read for this answer.

Other financing for cannabis companies typically comes from private lenders and investors, and terms can be costly. Those routes were not sourced here.

Can a church or religious organization get business or government funding?

What is an AgriStability interim payment and who can ask for one?

Canada · Canada Draft, not yet reviewed

An interim payment lets a producer get AgriStability money before the final benefit is calculated. It is based on estimates, not final results.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada says the estimated program year margin must decline by more than 30% of the estimated reference margin to receive one. For the 2026 program year, Manitoba producers affected by flooding saw the interim rate increase from 50% to 75% of the estimated final benefit.

The page's Manitoba notice gives March 31, 2027 as the deadline to apply for a 2026 interim payment. It also says producers who already received one would get an automatic top-up to 75%. The notice is specific to Manitoba and to the 2026 flooding, so other provinces may differ.

How does a food bank get USDA food through the Emergency Food Assistance Program?

United States Draft, not yet reviewed

Through the state. USDA provides USDA Foods and administrative funds to states, and states operate the Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP).

USDA describes TEFAP as a federal program that supplements the diets of people with low income by providing emergency food assistance at no cost. Because states run it, a food bank would generally deal with its state agency rather than apply to USDA directly. The page did not spell out the local steps, so confirm with the state.

SBA keeps a Franchise Directory of brands eligible for SBA financial assistance. Lenders can rely on it instead of reviewing franchise documents themselves, and brands that meet the FTC's franchise definition must be listed to obtain SBA financing. SBA says a listing is not an endorsement.

The FTC says the franchisor must give you the Franchise Disclosure Document at least 14 days before you are asked to sign or pay. Items 5 to 7 cover fees and start-up costs, and royalties may be owed even if you lose money. A lender's approval does not mean the franchise is a good investment.

No approval is promised. You can send CELER an enquiry.

Can a home-based or sole-proprietor business qualify for funding?

United States Draft, not yet reviewed

Often yes in principle, but the page does not say so outright. SBA 7(a) requires a for-profit business located in the US that meets size standards, is not an ineligible type, cannot get credit on reasonable terms elsewhere and shows ability to repay. The SBA pages read did not address home-based businesses or sole proprietors by name, so ask a lender.

SBA warns that a sole proprietor is not a separate legal entity, so the owner can be held personally liable for business debts, and that banks can be reluctant to lend to sole proprietorships.

7(a) funds can be used for working capital, equipment, supplies, changes of ownership, refinancing and real estate, within program limits.

A lender decides on credit, collateral and cash flow. No approval is promised. You can send CELER an enquiry.

Is there an SBA line of credit for seasonal businesses?

United States Draft, not yet reviewed

Yes, SBA 7(a) includes a Seasonal CAPLine, made through approved lenders.

SBA says CAPLines is an umbrella program for short-term and cyclical working capital needs. The Seasonal CAPLine finances seasonal increases in accounts receivable and inventory and, in some cases, the associated increase in labor costs. It may be revolving or non-revolving.

SBA's loan-type table says revolving lines of credit are permitted only under SBA Express, Export Express or CAPLines. The lender, not SBA, makes the credit decision on lender-delegated loans.

This is a guaranteed loan from a lender, so it must be repaid and approval is not assured. Terms, fees and current limits were not researched beyond SBA's table.

Next step: ask an SBA lender whether your seasonal cycle fits the Seasonal CAPLine, and read SOP 50 10, which SBA cites for details.

How does Canada's AgriStability program protect farm income?

Canada Draft, not yet reviewed

AgriStability can pay a Canadian farm when its production margin falls sharply below its history. It is a support payment program, not a loan.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada says it is a margin-based program under the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership. A payment may be possible if the current-year production margin falls below the historical reference margin by more than 30%. It covers 80% of the loss for every dollar below that threshold.

Each year a producer must enrol, pay a fee and submit a form by the deadlines. The federal government delivers it in Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, the Northwest Territories and Yukon. It is delivered provincially in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec and Prince Edward Island.

Nothing here predicts a payment.

Next step: use the benefit estimator on the page and check your province's deadlines.

What funding is there for tribal governments and Native-owned businesses in the US?

United States Draft, not yet reviewed

Some federal rules explicitly include tribal ownership, but this answer is limited to what was read. SBA's rule on ineligible businesses generally excludes government-owned entities, with an exception for entities owned or controlled by a Native American tribe (13 CFR 120.110(j)).

SBA's HUBZone page lists businesses at least 51% owned and controlled by an Indian tribe, an Alaska Native corporation or a Native Hawaiian organization among those that can qualify, but HUBZone benefits are for federal contracting, not loans.

Other programs, such as federal Indian loan guarantees and tribal development funds, were not confirmed in this run, because the pages tried did not load.

Check each program's own guide for eligibility and application steps. No funding is promised. You can send CELER an enquiry.

Do HUBZone businesses get loans or only contracting benefits?

United States Draft, not yet reviewed

On SBA's HUBZone page, the benefits are contracting-related only. They are eligibility for HUBZone set-aside contracts, where competition is limited to HUBZone firms, and a 10% price evaluation preference in full and open competitions.

The page does not mention any loan benefit tied to certification.

To qualify, a business must meet SBA size standards, be at least 51% owned and controlled by eligible owners such as US citizens, a Community Development Corporation, an agricultural cooperative, an Alaska Native corporation, a Native Hawaiian organization or an Indian tribe, have its principal office in a HUBZone, and have at least 35% of employees living in a HUBZone. Recertification is required every three years.

A set-aside is a way to win contracts, not funding or a grant. A loan from a lender is a separate application. Contact SBA's HUBZone office to confirm details.

What funding supports biotech and life-science startups?

United States Draft, not yet reviewed

A key US source is the SBIR and STTR program, often called America's Seed Fund. The SBIR.gov page describes it as equity-free funding from federal agencies for technology-focused small businesses and startups, and says eleven participating federal agencies fund awards, each running its own program.

As of 1 November 2026, the page says agencies may issue Phase I awards up to $335,937 and Phase II awards up to $2,239,578 without SBA approval, and higher amounts require a waiver. These are ceilings, not promised amounts.

The page read does not set out eligibility or phases, so use each agency's solicitation for scope, deadlines and rules. Awards are competitive. Canada has separate programs such as NRC IRAP and SR&ED, which are covered elsewhere on this site.

No approval or amount is promised.

What financing helps manufacturers buy equipment or expand?

United States Draft, not yet reviewed

In the US, SBA's 504 program is aimed at this. Funds can buy or build or renovate existing buildings or land and can finance long-term machinery and equipment with a useful life of at least 10 years. Working capital, inventory and speculative or rental real estate investment are excluded.

Loans are made through Certified Development Companies, SBA-certified nonprofits, together with a senior lender. The SBA page gives repayment terms of 10, 20 or 25 years with fixed rates, and its maximum amount is stated inconsistently ($5 million in one place, $5.5 million in another), so confirm with a CDC.

SBA 7(a) can also fund machinery, equipment and working capital for eligible small businesses. Both programs need a creditworthy for-profit business and lender approval.

No approval, rate or amount is promised. You can send CELER an enquiry.

Can small US manufacturers get a free energy assessment?

United States Draft, not yet reviewed

Yes, the Department of Energy says manufacturers can get a free energy assessment from an Industrial Training and Assessment Center (ITAC) or a third-party assessor.

DOE describes ITACs as providing hands-on technical help to small and medium-size manufacturers. After a remote survey, a team visits for one or two days, measures the plant and sends a confidential report within 60 days with cost, performance and payback estimates. About six to nine months later the team follows up on what was implemented. There are over 50 centers.

DOE also lists implementation grants of up to $300,000 per qualified recommendation. Whether a plant qualifies for the assessment or a grant was not set out in the text read here.

Nothing here predicts savings or an award.

Does Canada fund public EV charging stations through ZEVIP?

Canada Draft, not yet reviewed

Yes, but only through calls for proposals, and the one on the page read here is closed. NRCan says it closed that corridor-charging call on March 20, 2026.

The Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP) launched in 2019 to address the shortage of charging and hydrogen refuelling stations. Eligible applicants on the owners-and-operators page are legal entities incorporated or registered in Canada or abroad, including for-profit and not-for-profit organizations, utilities, industry associations, Indigenous businesses and governments. Individuals, the federal public administration and softwood lumber companies are not eligible.

Projects must be submitted by the organization that will own and operate the infrastructure. The closed call required public fast chargers and excluded ongoing operating costs like electricity.

Nothing here predicts a new call or an award.

Next step: watch NRCan's ZEVIP page for the next call and applicant guide.

Do child care operators apply to Ottawa for Canada-wide child care funding?

Canada Draft, not yet reviewed

No direct application is described on the federal page. Federal funding flows through agreements with provinces and territories.

The Federal Secretariat on Early Learning and Child Care negotiates and manages the bilateral agreements. The page ties them to goals such as an average of $10 a day for regulated child care spaces by 2025 to 2026, and says Budget 2021 committed up to $30 billion over five years.

It mentions an Early Learning and Child Care Innovation Program for innovative projects, but does not say who may apply. A small-projects component under the Enabling Accessibility Fund is marked closed.

How operators receive funds, such as fee-reduction or grants, is set by each province or territory and was not researched here.

Nothing here predicts eligibility.

Where do US mental-health and substance-use nonprofits find SAMHSA funding?

United States Draft, not yet reviewed

On SAMHSA's Grants Dashboard, which lists notices of funding opportunity (NOFOs) by year, plus state-run block grants.

SAMHSA's grants page lists 2026 NOFOs and 2027 NOFO forecasts, grant awards by state, and an archive. It names the Community Mental Health Services Block Grant and the Substance Use Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery Services Block Grant and links a directory of single state agencies. Other listed areas include tribal opportunities, serious mental illness funding, emergency response grants and Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic expansion grants.

The page read here does not say which organization types may apply to which grants, so eligibility has to be checked in each NOFO. Applications go through Grants.gov.

Nothing here predicts an award.

What financing is available for real estate investors and landlords?

United States Draft, not yet reviewed

SBA-backed loans are generally not for passive landlords. 13 CFR 120.110(c) makes passive businesses owned by developers or landlords ineligible if they do not actively use or occupy the assets bought or improved with loan proceeds, with an exception for certain "Eligible Passive Companies" under section 120.111.

The SBA 504 page also excludes speculative or rental real estate investment from eligible uses. An owner-occupant business that buys its own building is a different case.

Conventional investor financing, such as bank mortgages or private lenders, is not covered by the pages read, so no terms are described here.

If you operate a business that will occupy the property, ask a lender whether the structure fits SBA rules. No approval is promised, and rules differ outside the US.

Can a business whose main activity is lending or financing get an SBA loan?

United States Draft, not yet reviewed

Generally no. 13 CFR 120.110(b) lists businesses primarily engaged in lending, such as banks, finance companies and factors, as ineligible for SBA business loans, with some pawn shops possibly qualifying. A fintech whose main activity is lending or factoring may therefore be excluded.

A business that is not mainly a lender could still qualify. The same rule also excludes pyramid sale plans, certain gambling businesses, and any activity illegal under federal, state or local law. The regulation text does not mention cryptocurrency by name, so a crypto firm should ask a lender how those categories apply.

Other financing, such as venture investment or private lenders, was not sourced here. SBA's investment capital programs exist but have their own eligibility rules.

No approval is promised. Get advice from a lender or lawyer.

How do conservation nonprofits apply for National Fish and Wildlife Foundation grants?

United States Draft, not yet reviewed

By responding to program-specific requests for proposals (RFPs) listed on NFWF's site.

The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation provides competitive funding for projects that sustain, restore and enhance the nation's fish, wildlife, plants and habitats. Each of its initiatives has a business plan, and grants support the actions in those plans. Additional programs support other conservation projects.

The apply page shows announcements such as the Great Plains Grassland Fund 2026 to 2027 request for proposals (October 7, 2026) and the Atlantic Flyway Shorebird Initiative 2027 request (October 1, 2026). It also links information on budgets, indirect costs and required financial documents.

Is there student-loan repayment help for veterinarians who work in shortage areas?

United States Draft, not yet reviewed

Yes, in the US. USDA's Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program (VMLRP) can repay veterinarians' education debt in return for service in designated shortage areas.

NIFA says a veterinarian who commits to at least three years in a designated veterinary shortage area may have up to $40,000 of student loan debt repaid per year. Payments are limited to principal and interest on loans for a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or equivalent from an accredited college.

This helps the individual vet, not the clinic's own finances, and it is not a business grant. A clinic can mention it when recruiting but should not promise it.

The page's timeline shows a shortage nomination cycle opening October 5, 2026 for fiscal year 2027. Award decisions and the notice of funding opportunity were not read here.

Can a salon or barbershop get an SBA microloan?

United States Draft, not yet reviewed

Possibly. SBA microloans are for small, for-profit operating businesses in the US, and the page does not exclude personal-service shops.

SBA says the program gives loans up to $50,000 to help small businesses start up and expand. The average is about $13,000. Uses include working capital, inventory, supplies, furniture, fixtures, machinery and equipment. Proceeds cannot pay existing debts or buy real estate.

SBA funds nonprofit intermediary lenders, which make all credit decisions and set terms. The maximum term is seven years, and rates generally run between 8% and 13%, varying by intermediary. To apply, work with an approved intermediary in your area.

These are loans that must be repaid, and approval is not assured.

Can an outdoor-recreation or trail group use federal Recreational Trails Program money?

United States Draft, not yet reviewed

Possibly, but the money goes to states first. The Recreational Trails Program (RTP) provides funds to the states to develop and maintain recreational trails and trail-related facilities.

The Federal Highway Administration says RTP can fund trails for hiking, bicycling, in-line skating, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, off-road motorcycling, ATV riding, four-wheel driving and other off-road uses. The 2021 infrastructure law reauthorized it for federal fiscal years 2022 through 2026, as a set-aside from the Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside.

Each state runs its own program, so eligible applicants and project rules are set by the State RTP Administrator. The page was updated July 27, 2026.

Because authorization runs through fiscal 2026, check whether it has been extended.

Nothing here predicts funding. This is not a business loan.
